1995 music favorites
- PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
-
PJ has it all on her third full length, complete with production by flood.
- Archers of Loaf - Vee Vee
-
Archers of Loaf show who is best in Religh with their third
and best release yet. (for a taste of that NC, Religh sound)
- Yo La Tango - Electropura
-
They keep getting better. This one combines all the best sides of Yo La Tango
and just may push them into
the mainstream; if they're not there already.
- June of 44 - Engine Takes To Water
-
My personal favorite of 95. If you like Shellac, or are fond of Albini's
production styles, you'll love June of 44.
(Take Shellac's At Action Park and add an epic filter)
- 5 Style - 5 Style
-
Another example of the future of music coming of out Chicago!
(see also, Tortoise)
- Denison Kimball Trio - Soul Machine
-
Jesus Lizard's Denison, and Kimball, the former drummer of a Michigan based
hard rock group (I believe it starts with an "S", anyone...),
follow-up their amazing '94 release
with their trademark all instrumental jazz/rock fusion.
- A.P.E. - Striplight
-
'95 was the year of Trip-Hop, and A.P.E were all over the scene
with their amazing debut release on Doroado.
(forget Portoishead or Tricky, A.P.E take you one more bong hit beyond...)
- Mouse on Mars - Iaora Tahiti
-
'95 also saw the resurgence of dub and dub-influenced music.
Mouse on Mars released the sleeper dub-influenced album of the year.
Absolutely incredible sounds are found on this disc. Sounds
from somewhere other than earth. (spacey dub i guess you would call it).
(A great juxtoposition of new dub and electronics).
- Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do
-
Revolutionary! Brilliant!
This album is way ahead of its time. Similar to Brian Eno's early
releases, Aphex Twin may be misunderstood/unappreciated now,
but he will influence artists 10-20 years from now.
- Autechre - tri repetae
-
This may be an electronic album, but please don't call it techno!
Autechre have pushed the envelope of electronic music
and created a experience
that all music lovers will find uplifting and spiritually moving.
- Jake Slazenger - Makes A Racket
-
Whoa! Where did this come from? Left-field new form electro-funk at its finest.
Mike Paradinas (of mu-ziq) has used yet another
alias to release the creative music floating around in his head.
There is a slight bit of tongue-n-check in the whole affair but its
still good quality music and its like nothing else i've heard this year.
Out there; i like it!
