An absolute masterpiece. I wasn't sure if Tortoise would be able to top their
last album ("millions now living will never die"), but TNT absolutely blows it
away, surpasses it in every conceivable way. Words fail to describe the beauty
of this album. It simply sounds unlike anything else. There is so much going on
in this music: layers of complementing tracks, simple melodies inside of constantly
shifting arrangements, jazzy kit work, skittering drum machines, gurgling synthesizers,
the clattering of marimbas vibes and other percussion, dub bass, guitar, and John
McEntire's studio electronics. There's even cello,violin,cornet,and trombone on a
couple of tracks. I read that the songs were put together using cut and paste editing
(as was Millions), but TNT has a much more organic feel. There's really no bad songs.
The entire album is great. Along with Sonic Youth's "A Thousand Leaves" and the new
recording of Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians", this is one of my favorite albums
of '98. Tortoise seems to take creative leaps, not steps, and I can't wait to hear their
next release. You know,it's too bad that most of the world is more interested in
commercial radio drivel than in art. It's too bad that a band as original and talented as Tortoise
will probably never receive the kind of exposure and recognition they deserve.
It's bands like this that influence the future of music.
This is important music.

Have heard it all (S/T, Millions, TNT, Remixes, etal)
By far one of (if not THE) most original groups of the 90's
Spin trashed this album, so fuck them. The opening track makes me cry, as does the entire album;
They are just waving the flag of original music, and that cannot be denied. See them live if you haven;t, and you'll know what I'm talking about.
If you have seen them live, I'm looking for bootlegs... emaiL: WQKE@USA.NET

only heard millions and tnt.
the former sounds too much like tubular bells,
and I heard that one 24 years ago.
the latter has a more eclectic and lighter groove,
making it more enjoyable to listen to anytime.

My friends declare that this isn't as good as Millions. I declare that this is one of the best records of last year. All those kiddos in Rolling Stone say that 1998 wasn't a good year for music. Fuck them. 1998 was a great year.

The long-awaited follow-up to Millions... does not disappoint. Actually, it surpasses all expectations for me.
